Overview
The Old School in Newark began life as a single-storey primary school. We saw something different in it – a building with the right scale, the right footprint, and the potential to become something genuinely meaningful. It is now home to eight people with learning disabilities and autism, each living in their own self-contained apartment with the support they need around them.
The Detail
The conversion involved reimagining the entire building around the needs of its future residents and the care teams supporting them. Eight fully accessible, self-contained apartments were created alongside dedicated staff facilities — including a sleep-in bedroom to support 24/7 care provision — communal areas, external gardens, and on-site parking.
The Outcome
Eight people now have what this project was always intended to deliver: a forever home. A place that is truly theirs, within their community, with the right support around them. Repurposing a building that might otherwise have been lost, and turning it into something that changes lives — that’s what this work is about.
